Abandon All Hope, Ye who Enter Here
Lost in the “wood,” Dante must literally and figuratively journey through hell in order to find his way. In reality he had been banished from Florence, his home. This meant he could never return to see his family or his friends. Banishment severed all alliances and protections. He was truly lost in his personal life.
In his journey, having survived the horrors of Hell, his journey continues through the mountain of Purgatory where he witness the continued suffering yet salvation of mankind.
Midway thru my life, I found myself lost in a dark wood,
for the known path was lost...
for the known path was lost...
Nel mezzo del camin, di nostra vita,
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura,
che la diritta via era smarrita.
Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura,
esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte,
che nel pensier rinova la paura!
Tant’ è amara che poco è più morte;
